What does alum mean?
Alum is a derivation of the Latin words alumnus and alumna, which mean male and female graduate respectively. The increasingly common gender-neutral term is used by many top universities. The plural is alumni.
Who is a Maastricht University alum?
Anyone who has graduated from an accredited bachelor’s or master’s programme and also the previous Dutch education programmes or obtained a PhD at Maastricht University.
How do I become an alum?
As soon as you have your degree certificate or PhD from Maastricht University you automatically become an alum; you will be included in the alumni database from your graduation date. You will be informed of this by email, and will have immediate access to AlumniNet (the virtual alumni community) via a personal code. You can participate in alumni activities and use your alumni email account and other services.
What are the advantages of being a UM alum?

- You can subscribe to the Maastricht University Magazine with interesting news and background articles about UM and its alumni for free;
- You will receive Alumni news, the digital newsletter, every three months;
- You can use facilities and services for alumni offered by UM Career Services, UM Sport and the UM Language Centre and Studium Generale.
Above all: it’s fun to stay in touch with your former classmates, return to Maastricht once in a while, reminisce together and forge new friendships.
