Opening academic year 2010-2011

On Monday 6 September 2010 Maastricht University celebrated the opening of the 2010-2011 academic year. 'University for the future' was the theme for this year's opening ceremony. What should our graduates have to offer to meet the European and global demands for knowledge and innovation in 2030 and beyond? This event's programme explored this theme from several perspectives.


The morning seminar focused upon academic reflection. Jointly with other participants visitors shared their visions for 2030 and the implications for research and teaching today. You can download the speeches that were held during the morning on the seminar page.


The opening ceremony in the afternoon had a more creative dimension. Bettany Hughes, historian, writer and broadcaster delivered the keynote speech entitled 'Ta Erotika - the Socratic Future of Education and of Society’.

The afternoon programme also consisted of announcing the winners of the annual UM Student Award and the Edward Hustinx Stipend.

Besides these, a special meeting for entrepreneurs was organised by the MKB Portal. The theme for this entrepreneurs meeting was: Entrepreneurship for the future.
