Open Education week

Welcome to the Maastricht University Open Education Week portal

The Open Education Week is a celebration of the global Open Education Movement. Its purpose is to raise awareness about open education and its impact on teaching and learning worldwide. Participation in all events and use of all resources are free and open to everyone.

Every year we invite UM staff to share their activities in the field of open education and offer this platform to put them in the spotlight. But feel free to make us aware of ongoing initiatives before the next week to take place!

If you are new to open education, we suggest that you start with “What is Open Education”.

Leiden/Maastricht partnership earns funding in tender on Open and Online Education

For four years in a row (2015-2018) the Dutch Ministry of Education provides funding for projects in the field of Open and Online Education. In the first round 45 project proposals were submitted. On May 1, the Minister of Education announced which of these project proposals were granted, including a project where Maastricht University, together with Leiden University, participates in!

Project on Topic Oriented Open Learning (TOOL) platform for Anatomy

In anatomy education known bottlenecks are:

  • Insufficient and costly access to good material
  • Insufficient quality and organization of online learning material
  • Inadequate online anatomy exercise and rehearse opportunities for students
  • Insufficient anatomical teaching aids for teachers.

This project will provide an (inter) nationally online anatomy platform that aims to support anatomy learning through a mash-up (such as www.booking.com), containing anatomical content and functions as : a) open content : anatomical learning materials and images; b) recommendations of quality controlled open (online) anatomy content; and c) tools for students and teachers to support learning and instruction of anatomy.

The platform is meant for students and professionals in health-related education, health care workers and the general public, primarily in the Netherlands and Flanders, secondary worldwide. The platform development is accompanied by an initiative for the joint creation of open material by eleven departments of Anatomy in the Netherlands and Flanders. To ensure the quality of the content and financial continuity of the open resources, a model will be explored with peer review, credit provision and freemium offerings. A learning platform as this is also applicable in other disciplines. The software will therefore be offered open source. From our university Leo Koehler, and Andreas Herrler (FHML) are involved.

Interested in the tender or as it is called the Stimuleringsregeling Open en Online Onderwijs or other granted projects. Check the SURF-website (merely in Dutch).

UM goes MOOC!

Maastricht University is about to launch its first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from September. The topic is central to our education: Problem-Based Learning (PBL).

As this MOOC also follows PBL principles, working online in small groups is an important part. To uphold the university’s reputation, we want this first-ever UM MOOC to run smoothly and give an honest impression of our approaches to teaching. Therefore we’ve set up an internal try-out of this brand new MOOC and invite UM employees to participate. The try-out started on Monday, 11 May, and lasted 8 weeks.

For more information about the UM MOOC, please visit: http://moocs.maastrichtuniversity.nl

Curious about (other) open education at Maastricht University?

  • We updated this portal on UM initiatives which goes back to 2012
  • For impressions on several workshops in 2013 we refer to the news item in the menu on the right side
  • And to conclude: we were happy to meet so many colleagues willing to share their work and ideas on open education!
