Learning and resource centre collections

Physical and digital learning resources

Books

^ top

The collection of study books in the Learning and Resource Centre is made up of literature that is used in the university’s various curricula. You can find this collection in the catalogue, which you can access via the homepage of this website. This collection is recognisable by its location codes.

  • In the Inner City Library, the codes begin with
    • SW (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences)
    • SF (School of Business and Economics)
    • SJ (Faculty of Law).
  • In the Randwyck Library all locations codes start with SL.

Faculty tutors compile the collection for the Learning and Resource Centre. For each course, the tutor decides which titles should be available in the centre. Every year, the tutor then screens the titles for relevance and currency. You can make any suggestions for new orders with your tutor.

In principle, several titles are available per subject, and several editions per title. These books are not for loan; they should be present in the Learning and Resource Centre at all times.

Audiovisual media

^ top

Along with books, the Learning and Resource Centre is also home to a range of audiovisual media. You can find these in the catalogue, under Subset: AV media.

Like the books in the learning and resource centre, the audiovisual media are not for loan. But there is one exception to this rule: if a DVD or videotape is needed for a lecture, course introduction or another educational activity within the university, you can borrow it at the information desk, where you will need to agree on a loan period with the staff on duty.

In the Randwyck Library, room 3.414 has PCs specially equipped for playing audiovisual media. For group work involving audiovisual media, you can also use the AV group room, 3.487, where you'll find a TV and a DVD/video player. Further, in the Randwyck library there are two PCs in room 1.413 (next to the information desk) for playing audiovisual media.

In the Inner City Library, you can play audiovisual media on any PC by following these steps: Start – Programs – Tools – Mediaplayer Classic – File – Open disk – click in the window. There is also a PC where you can play DVDs directly via the desktop icon 'Windows Mediaplayer' (near the information desk, next to the study place for disabled people).

You can buy a set of headphones from the document supply desk in either library location for €20.

To view and print old government and other publications, you can use the microfiche reader/printer in the Inner City Library (on level 1).

Anatomy models

The second floor of the Randwyck Library houses a collection of anatomy models.

Digital learning resources

^ top

The library is offering an increasing number of learning resources in digital form, such as course books, literature folders, e-readers and PhD dissertations from the different faculties. You can find these media via the library tab in Maastricht University’s electronic learning environment (EleUM).

In the eLibrary on the library website, you can find e-books, e-journals, databases and UM publications.

Multimedia

^ top

In both library locations you can play multimedia files (e.g. sound and image files) from the internet, and also work with and save these files to use in your own work (essays, theses, portfolios or other assignments).

To this end, you can use SURF’s national ‘virtual cutting machine’. With this you can select from a large offer of streamed (i.e. from the internet) video files, which, for example, you can link to in your assignment.
