Multiphoton Imaging of cardiovascular disease.
Marc van Zandvoort is leader of the multiphoton groups, both in Maastricht and Aachen. He is also Vice-president and secretary of the Vital Imaging Steering committee of Maastricht University. The multiphoton research group in Maastricht applies multiphoton microscopy to the imaging of the cardiovascular system. Both ex vivo, in situ and in vivo imaging of microcirculation, large arteries, and heart are feasible. Most experiments are carried out in mouse models. The two available multiphoton microscopes (BioRad MP2100 and Leica SPC TP5) are under continuous technical supervision of Jeroen Hameleers. Software applications for image processing are handled by Anneke van Susteren. Furthermore various post-docs and PhD students (Kim Douma, Timo Rademakers, Mitrajit Ghosh, Jort Merken) run specific projects on the set-ups, ranging from imaging of arteriogenesis, imaging or plaque angiogenesis, NO imaging, and imaging of arterial structure for input as modeling parameters. Furthermore, a large number of cooperations with other groups within and outside CARIM are existing. Finally, there are two multiphoton set-ups available at the Universitaetsklinikum in Aachen (Olympus MP and LaVision Biotech MP), where other PhD students run projects mostly concerning leukocyte diapedesis, cytokine deposition, and multimodal US-MP imaging.
