Significant rise of UM on world ranking universities
Over 60 places higher in one year!
Universiteit Maastricht has climbed no less than 60 places on the annual international university top-200 ranking established by the Times Higher Education Supplement. UM ranked 111th, as opposed to place 172 last year. (See also www.thes.co.uk).
UM’s better ranking is for the most part explained by a better evaluation of its academics, but also by UM’s good reputation of its graduates (employers are asked to indicate which university they prefer to hire graduates from). Last but not least, its relatively high percentage of foreign staff and students (obtaining 99 out of 100 points in the THES) plays a huge part in its better position on the ranking.
Interestingly enough, UM ranks considerably higher than the classic universities in the Netherlands, such as Nijmegen and Groningen, who both offer all disciplines and have a much longer record than UM.
UM ranks on a similar level as many of its partner universities –such as Queens in Canada – which in their own national rankings invariably end in top positions.
SBE’s double degree partners find themselves above the median: anywhere between places 30 and 100. This indicates an international willingness from universities with a higher ranking to accept UM as institution to reckon with, and to do major business with.
By all means no mean feat!
