Average ranking UM in Publication Top 40

Five SBE economists feature on the new Publication Top 40. Part-time full professor Peter Wakker is the highest ranking economist at #14, closely followed on #18 by Prof. John Hagedoorn and by Prof. Co de Ruyter on #19. The Top 40, as always published in the Dutch professional journal Economisch Statistische Berichten (ESB), is based on the number of international publications.

ESB looks at the individual ranking of professors in the Top 40 for a ranking of the participating Schools and faculties. Based on these data the Maastricht University School of Business comes 5th, which means we dropped one place on the ladder as opposed to the 2008 ranking. Rotterdam, as always, ranks first. Significant is Wageningen, which came in second.  Conspicuous by its absence was Tilburg, which decided not to take part this year for reasons known only to them and perhaps ESB.

The Top 40, which this year covers the period 2003-2007, was realised after analysing the Science Citation Index (SCI) and the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), taken from Thomson ISI’s database Web of Science.  Articles, comments, letters, notes, reviews and proceedings papers all count towards the citation score, yet book reviews, editorials, abstracts, corrections, software reviews, biographical items and congress reports are exempted. The publications score of an article is weighted against the number of authors that collaborated on the article and is set against the impact factor of the magazine in question.

The full ESB publication can be found here (in Dutch).
