Rumour has it! The Power of Gossip at the Workplace

Organisations have formal designs. They tell us who does what and who reports to whom. The organogram gives us an idea of these formal relations. Informal behaviour at the workplace, however, is more difficult to see. Managers tend to neglect these activities, sometimes with disastrous results. Disregarding what informally happens at work also means: missing opportunities!
Gossip is perhaps the most widespread informal behaviour at the workplace. Gossip can harm people and projects, and thus must be tackled. But gossip can also be positive. For instance, through gossip newcomers can learn the corporate culture more quickly. Does gossip facilitate learning at the workplace?

Speaker: Dr. Ad van Iterson
