European Law Moot Court Competition (ELMC)

Language: English and French
Admission criteria: The ELMC is open to students at Bachelor’s (third year) and Master’s level with knowledge of and interest in the law of the European Union. Language proficiency in English and French, both written and oral, is required.
Procedure: Student teams of three to four members submit a written memorial on behalf of two parties to a fictitious legal dispute before the European Court of Justice. Based on the quality of the written submissions, the best teams advance to the regional finals. Teams plead in different sessions for both parties; one team member plays an individual role as either Advocate General or Commission representative. The best teams, and the best individual role-players, move on to the grand finals before the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.
History: Maastricht won the grand finals in Luxemburg as the best team in 1997, 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010, and finished third in 2005. Maastricht won the best written memorial award in 2007 and 2010. Furthermore, Maastricht students finished as best Advocate General or best Commission representative in 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2003.

Jean Pictet Competition
Subject-area: International humanitarian law
Language: English and French
Admission criteria: The Jean Pictet competition is open to students at Bachelor’s and Master’s level with knowledge of and interest in international humanitarian law. Language proficiency in English and French is required.
Procedure: Student teams represent a party in a fictitious international dispute, such as a government, a rebel movement, or the Red Cross. The competition does not comprise pleadings before a panel of judges, but constitutes a simulation in real time, with incoming news and factual developments in the course of sessions. There is one session in English and one in French.
Admission: Selection in October.
