The Department of Architecture is developing a Research Agenda focusing on Transformation in Architecture and Spatial Planning for the forthcoming years. This research at the Department of Architecture is organized in multidisciplinary teams and in close cooperation with international institutes, business and industry. High-quality researchers from the different faculties involved in the EMA programme have attracted international attention by taking the lead in several large European research projects.

The Department of Architecture’s research will be characterized as ‘design-oriented research’. This encompasses a broad typology of research activities between intuitive design, (peer reviewed) scientific research and applied professional research and consultancy. The following categories of research can be distinguished:

  • Evaluation research, which is characterized as the empirical study of existing architectural objects, urban environments and transformation processes. It analyses the effects and consequences of architectural and urban transformation
  • Historical research, which analyses, interprets, understands and explains designs and transformation processes in the built environment
  • Conceptual research, which is exploratory and experimental and aims at innovative architectural concepts for (the transformation of) buildings and at visionary concepts for (sustainable transition of) the European city
  • Applied research and consultancy, which is research done for professional clients, where optimum solutions should be found for generic or for specific spatial assignments

The research portfolio of the Department of Architecture and the UM in general continues to attract national and international top researchers. But we also believe in young talent. That’s why UM integrates research into every level of our education.
