The story of:
Dominique Sluijsmans was born on the 5th of November 1973. After completing a pre-university secondary education at the ‘Katholiek Gymnasium Rolduc’ in 1993, she studied Educational Sciences at the Radboud University of Nijmegen. She graduated in 1997, after a work placement of a year at an educational consultancy company (KPC-group).
From 1997 until 2009 she worked as a research associate at the Center of Learning Sciences and Technologies (CELSTEC) at the Open University of the Netherlands. In 2002, she finished her PhD-project entitled ‘Student involvement in assessment: the training of peer assessment skills’. After her PhD-project, she further investigated the complexity of assessing one’s own and peers’ work in the context of teacher- and medical education. Although her main inspiration of study has been self- and peer assessment, within her research group she also gained research expertise on subjects as portfolio assessment, the acquisition and recognition of prior learning, feedback, learner control, dynamic task selection, and instructional design.
Dominique has published in international and national journals, was awarded for her thesis, received a research-grant, and has given many lectures for a diverse audience in higher and vocational education. In 2008 she started as an associate professor (lector) at HAN University, where she leads several projects on sustainable assessment. Her lectoral address ‘Involved in assessment’ presents the main ideas underlying these projects.
In summary, her ambition is to emphasize a holistic perspective on assessment in education, which aims at an active participation of students in assessment practice for professional and sustainable learning. The design of assessment, the communication between learners and teachers about assessment and self-directed learning in assessment are key themes. Since 2009 she has been co-coordinator of the EARLI SIG 1 'Assessment and Evaluation'. Besides her position at HAN University, she is associate professor at Maastricht University (unpaid).
