I have been trained as an educationalist and came in 1994 to the University of Maastricht to join the Department of Educational Development and Research. My area of expertise lies in evaluation and assessment. The work of my PHD thesis was on the learning and assessment of reflective skills with a portfolio. Over the years my research developed to three main interest areas that are closely related to each other:

  • portfolios for learning and assessment purposes;
  • the learning and assessment in the workplace, especially in specialists training;
  • the self-critical doctor, how to stimulate and assess self-criticalness.

I am involved in the development of electronic portfolios for work based assessment. A part of my work is international: I mentor PHD students from diverse countries and I have participated in a variety of international projects like consultancies and research projects in and outside of Europe and a visiting professorship at the Gifu Medical School in Gifu, Japan. I am an editor of Evaluation & the Health Professions Journal.
