An International Master in Health Professions Education Programme (MHPE) in Brasilia, Brasil from the School of Health Professions Education (SHE) Maastricht University, the Netherlands. This two-year, internationally recognized, specialization course will lead to a research-based Masters degree from Maastricht University.
The objectives of the MHPE programme are to provide teachers of health professionals, such as physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, dentists, speech therapists and others with the capacity to implement and improve their educational programmes and to conduct educational research related to regional and national health priorities. The MHPE programme focuses on the acquisition of competencies and abilities (knowledge and skills), relevant for innovative medical and health professions education in Brasil and Latin America.
The MHPE is a two-year, half-time programme that is mostly distance-based and online. The first year of the programme focuses on the themes and methods of teaching and learning, curriculum development, assessment and evaluation, and organization and management of the field of health professions education. The second year focuses on basic and advanced principles and practices of research plus electives such as design of authentic learning environments, advanced assessment and evaluation, and professional development of teachers. There will be several electives specific to regional health needs, the Brasilian National Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde - SUS, the Unique System of Health), and ProSaude and other national initiatives that promote the development of health professions and health care will be developed during the second year of the course. The course culminates in the presentation and defense of a research-based thesis.
The international teaching staff will be from the Netherlands, Brasil, Latin America and the United States. The course will be conducted presentially and online in English. Course coordinators are Professors Stewart Mennin in São Paulo and Jan van Dalen in the Netherlands.
