Physician-Clinical Investigator (MSc/MD)

The Physician-Clinical Investigator programme offers you the opportunity to combine a medical degree with a clinical investigator degree. It focuses on translational medicine: bridging the gap between research and care delivery by translating questions from patient care into research, and applying research results to care.

The physician component is equivalent to the Dutch master’s degree in medicine, which allows you to apply for entry to any medical specialist programme (primary care, paediatrics, surgery, etc.). The combined degree also offers excellent prospects for a fast track towards a PhD.

This four-year programme is taught in Dutch, although parts of the clinical investigator component are offered in English.

This master’s programme consists of four consecutive blocks:

  • The basis/foundation of medicine and science (40 weeks / 60 ECTS)
  • The patient and science: between theory and practice (30 weeks / 45 ECTS)
  • Medical business and clinical research in practice (60 weeks / 90 ECTS)
  • Science in healthcare (30 weeks / 45 ECTS).

In each block your knowledge, skills, professional competence and scientific consciousness will come into play. During the physician component, you will gradually become more independent in dealing with patients and in your role as a medical practitioner. The clinical investigator component will first provide you with basic medical scientific knowledge and then train you to do clinical research, solve problem analysis issues and write a scientific report.
