Problem-Based Learning

By choosing to follow the master's programme in Medicine, you opt for a substantially different approach: education at Maastricht University is both problem-based and patient-oriented. Problem-Based Learning (PBL) implies that you actively look for knowledge, independently and together with other students. You do this based on concrete patient problems. You analyse and discuss the problem and then try to find a solution to the problem. Subsequently, you discuss the problem and solutions with other students in a small group.

In addition to the problem-based approach, the programme is mostly patient-oriented. In the first two years, you follow 11 obligatory clinical rotations during which you have much contact with patients. You put theory into practice, aiming to finally solve the patient’s problem based on your current knowledge and the new knowledge you acquire by means of research.
