Teaching methods

The master's programme in European Public Health offers an integrated curriculum which is based on a combination of different educational methodologies, specifically Active and Self-Directed Learning (ASDL), Problem-Based Learning, tutorials and lectures, while also offering the opportunity for you to pursue your own research under the supervision of experts.

ASDL and Problem-Based Learning
Active and Self-Directed Learning (ASDL) is an innovative, student-centred instructional method which incorporates the Problem-Based Learning methodology which is at the core of Maastricht University. The PBL system employs the use of small teaching groups in which students are challenged to take an active role in the learning process, and to join forces to approach a particular problem – analysing it from the widest possible range of perspectives, using many sources of information, and together devising potential solutions.
ASDL encourages you to be critical, self-motivated and independent. As in the workplace, it's up to you to decide what needs to be done. It could be writing an essay, organising a symposium, or conducting interviews - anything that helps you to become a competent health policy professional. You are encouraged to be visionary and self-reliant.

Tutorial groups
The tutorial group or workshop is the working centre of PBL. The project-based groups are small, and are facilitated by a tutor, but students take it in turn to chair and focus discussion. The tutorial group is the forum for research, and for formulating practical solutions to open-ended, real world problems. Within your tutorial group, you are assigned and carry out research projects, formulate a solution for a specific situation, present the results, and receive feedback from your fellow students and your tutor. This gives you invaluable experience in working as part of a team, and in developing the professional skills you will need in the field of health policy.

Lectures and seminars

Each module includes lectures and seminars presented by faculty members and by expert professionals in the field of health, so that you have both familiarity with the status quo and working knowledge of current and ongoing developments.

Excursions
Maastricht's central location makes it feasible to visit healthcare facilities, organisations, and government offices in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, as well as EU offices in Brussels.
