Universiteit Maastricht

International experience

This programme is intrinsically international and European, not only in its focus, but also in the makeup of students and staff. More than half of the university's master's students come from abroad, and they bring a broad range of perspectives and experiences to bear on the study of European health systems and policies.

The search for best practices, benchmarks and standards has become a key issue for the provision of health and the delivery of healthcare in Europe, both for EU member states and non-members. Border regions in particular, where citizens of different countries reside alongside one another – as in Maastricht – often require joint action to cope with existing problems and the ever-expanding challenges of the health sector. When these regions combine typical regional social and/or health problems with cross-border issues in health and the delivery of healthcare, study of the situation becomes imperative, and there is a clear need for appropriately trained professionals who can formulate and implement effective policy.
