Epidemiology
Epidemiology focuses on the occurrence, the distribution and the determinants of health and disease, and on the methods that can be used to study these phenomena. It is considered a cornerstone of public health, preventive medicine and evidence-based clinical medicine. Epidemiologists investigate the aetiology, diagnosis and prognosis of diseases in humans. In recent years, there has been a rising demand for epidemiological research expertise in various fields of application: biomedical research, clinical practice, risk estimation and healthcare policy.
The Master of Public Health specialisation in Epidemiology meets that demand. The programme is linked to the research goals of various schools of Maastricht University’s Faculty of Health Medicine and Life Sciences, in particular:
- School for Public Health and Primary Care (CAPHRI)
- School for Oncology and Developmental Biology (GROW)
- The NUTRIM School for Nutrition, Toxicology & Metabolism
The curriculum of the programme is also adapted to the Dutch requirements to become certified as an Epidemiologist A, accredited by the Netherlands Epidemiology Society in collaboration with the National Committee for Medical-Biological Research Training in the Netherlands.
The specialisation in Epidemiology is taught entirely in English. Students can either complete the curriculum as a one-year, full-time programme or as a two-year, part-time programme. Graduates will receive a Master of Science degree in Public Health, with a specialisation in Epidemiology.
