International Track in Medicine

Do you want to study Medicine and do you also have a strong interest in other cultures and languages? Does international cooperation in patient care, research and education appeal to you?

As of September 2011, Maastricht University in the Netherlands offers an English variation of its Dutch bachelor’s programme in Medicine, called 'International Track in Medicine' (ITM).

Global mobility
Central concepts within ITM – integrated in the Medical Programme – are globalisation and international collaboration. This can be interesting to you as a future medical doctor in several ways. First of all, doctors in the Netherlands are increasingly confronted with patients from different cultural backgrounds and who speak different languages. Second, as a result of global mobility, doctors will see an increasing number of patients with disorders that do not normally occur in the Netherlands. Finally, if you want to work abroad as a medical doctor, it can be an advantage to have completed an internationally oriented programme. This does not only apply to emergency care or development cooperation, but also to other forms of collaboration in the areas of patient care and research.

Small-scale bachelor’s programme
ITM is a small-scale bachelor’s programme with year groups of approximately 60-80 students, employing the system of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in its educational activities. The year group of academic year 2012-2013 will primarily consist of a mixture of Dutch students and students from Saudi Arabia, and possibly a small number of students from EU countries other than the Netherlands. During some of the blocks, the group will be joined by ‘visiting students’ from various European countries.

After completing the ITM bachelor’s programme, students can continue with the master’s programme in Dutch, provided their Dutch proficiency level is at least NT2 (Dutch as a second language). They can also follow parts of their master’s programme abroad. Apart from the NT2 the student also has to follow and successfully conclude a course in medical Dutch.
