Research profile

The research institute of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University focuses on societies and cultures as they unfolded during the modern and contemporary era. We study the interrelationships of Europeanisation, globalisation, scientific and technological development, political change and cultural innovation.  We are interested in how today’s societies cope with and reflect these challenges in various ways. These could be artistic practices and practices of remembrance as well as specific forms of governance and political integration as well as strategies for managing knowledge, technologies and risks. Our original focus on the development of societies and cultures in Western Europe is more and more complemented by a focus on the whole of Europe and in particular on the way in which European societies and global affairs are interlinked. In our research we are aware that understanding our present world is impossible without insight into its past. This is why historical research is a key element of our scholarly and educational identity.
