Past Projects
Working on future scenarios for a policy on diversity. Participating in the activities of the European working group, 'Women in Science', for the European Technology Assessment Network (ETAN).
The project ZON/MW, conducted by Mineke Bosch and Ilse van Lamoen; an evaluation of the effectiveness of recently implemented measures with a view to integrating diversity into the programmes and projects of ZON/MW (Research about Care in the Netherlands/subject area Medical Science of NWO).
For the UM the Centre has for a period of 5 years (2000-2005) conducted the university-wide project Onderzoeksatelier, consisting of intensive information for the academic community on how to effectively use the many financial resources, stimulate women, stimulate more applications, organize expert meetings during which concept applications are discussed, organize a yearly Big Money Day, give presentation trainings for the Vernieuwingsimpuls, coach female (but also male) scientists. These initiatives have been transferred since 2005 to the current Knowledge centre, which continues all the activities of the Onderzoeksatelier. Commitment to more gender equality at the top has found a wider platform.

Participation of Women as Priority for Science!
Universities and Science institutions are always on the lookout for (top)talent. Only by continually educating new talent, attracting it and offering them the chance to grow, will the quality of science stay level. This search for new talent sometimes goes too far. There is mass potential of good and highly educated scientific talent: female scientists! The EQUAL project Participation of Women as Priority for Science wants to stimulate and support the use of this potential.
Based on their competences and experience more women can be active as professor, associate professor, or other high positions in science. This is does not only benefit the women themselves, but also science. By taking advantage of this wide offer of perspectives the quality and the diversity in science improves.
Besides, it is a return on investment of the money, the time and the energy spend on the education and development of these talented women.
We are on the right path: these past years a lot has been undertaken to increase the participation of women in science. And with success; the number of women in science is increasing. However there can still be an improvement in the number of women in high scientific positions in the Netherlands: of the 100 professors only 9 are women.
In the EQAUL project organizations with a policy determining position in the field of science and research, universities and representatives of the target group work together in order to promote the accession of women to science.
By systematically contributing and sharing knowledge and experience form different angles, widely supported insights and solutions are found. This way we can build a powerhouse of information on gender, diversity and science. The project runs from September 2005 till end of 2007.

European Festival October 4 & 5, 2007
Ceramique district, Maastricht, The Netherlands
There are enough qualified women to take on key positions in academia - if only those women and the academic institutions would recognise the opportunities for female talent in science, education and research.
With W.I.S.E.R., a two-day European festival, we want to celebrate this female talent, put female scientists in the spotlight and prime female academics to aim for the highest.
W.I.S.E.R. offers inspiring keynotes and interviews with female scientists from all over Europe, debates on gender and scientific excellence; media training for female talent; HRM tools for change; mentoring and coaching; application training for professorships in Europe; workshops on aspects such as salary negotiations; and a research funding lab where experts give advice on how to write winning proposals. An accompanying art and culture track will provide a different perspective on the issue.
W.I.S.E.R. creates the opportunity for scientists and students, politicians and policy makers, HR professionals and gender specialists to meet in a setting that is challenging and informal. A two-day arena for refreshing and confronting debates on the meaning and the implications of making science truly inclusive. The festival will be opened by the Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science, Ronald Plasterk (to be confirmed).
Join in, get W.I.S.E.R! Block off October 4 and 5 in your agenda.
W.I.S.E.R. is a joint initiative of partners in the EQUAL project Priority for Participation. W.I.S.E.R. is organized by the Centre for Gender and Diversity, Maastricht University in cooperation with SoFoKleS and Cultuurfabriek.
W.I.S.E.R. is made possible by generous financial contributions from ESF/EQUAL, Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, and SoFoKleS.
Gender Basic (2005-2008)
FP6 project: GenderBasic: Promoting the integration of the gender dimension in basic research in ERA/FP7
The European Commission has published Research for Europe. A selection of EU success stories. GenderBasic was included among the 40 selected projects titled: Sex matters - in life sciences research.
Contractor: Centre for Gender and Diversity
Coordinator: Ineke Klinge, PhD
Project Management Team:
Ineke Klinge, PhD;
Mineke Bosch, PhD;
Rein Vos, MD, PhD
Researcher: Madelief Bertens, MSc, MA
FP6 Specific Support Action: GenderBasic: Promoting the integration of the gender dimension in basic research in ERA/FP7
The objective of GenderBasic was to ensure a better integration of the gender dimension in basic life sciences research. Considering the gender dimension in research means that attention must be given to both biological sex characteristics and to socially constructed gender characteristics of men and women and to the complex interaction between those characteristics.
