Today's societies are confronted with a great many issues:
- How can the challenges of globalisation, Europeanisation and technological change be dealt with? Do we have the right tools to govern our societies? What role do the media, civil society, experts and bureaucrats play in this?
- How can societies be kept together, not least in terms of their collective past and collective identity? How are practices of remembering organised and how do they change over time?
- What is the relevance of the nation state as an organising framework for cultures and societies? How have the institutions of society developed in the past? Can Europe be a format within which democratic life, societal values and cultural activities can be organised and expressed in a meaningful way?
- How does the internet age transform our society? What does it mean to be alone in the networked world? To what extent does the internet blur the distinction between the producers and consumers of art?
- People are on the move everywhere. The industrialised societies are transformed by the influx of migrants, as are the societies where migrants come from. How do these societies and the migrants and their families themselves cope?
- What is the role of science in society? How do scientific progress and cultural change interrelate? And how does scientific progress impact on the ethical standards of a society?
