Literature & Art

The Department of Literature & Art is the locus of the Faculty's expertise in the fields of literary history, literary theory (including literary psychology), film and media theory, art history, theatre studies and the various methodologies of textual analysis and analysis of imagery, as well as philosophical reflection on these disciplinary fields of activity in an interdisciplinary context.

Teaching

The teaching within the department is to a large extent incorporated in the Arts and Culture programme. This department has taken the initiative to set up a Master's degree specialisation in Media Culture.

The embedding of its content-related and methodological expertise in the Arts and Culture teaching programme means that the group in its own way contributes to the analysis and interpretation of the problems of modern society, with particular attention to the role of science in our culture, and aims to illustrate the relationship between literary and art historical processes and broader cultural, social, philosophical and scientific developments.

Research

Within the research institute for Arts and Sciences, members of the Department of Literature & Art participate particularly in section 3 (Science and Culture: texts and contexts) and in the NWO programme 'The Mediated Body'.
Another NWO project, in which the co-operation of the Catholic University of Louvain is involved, is entitled 'Regional Literature in Flanders and the Netherlands, 1900-1960: poetical profiling, dynamics and evolution of a literary genre, via textual and contextual analysis'.
The researchers in the Deppartment of Literature & Art are affiliated to the Netherlands Graduate School of Science, Technology and Modern Culture (WTMC) and the Graduate School for Literary Studies (OSL).
