History
Welcome to the Department of History!
The department is the locus of the Faculty’s expertise in the field of history. Our staff specializes in political, social, economic and cultural history, as well as the history of science and technology. While it mainly focuses on European history, there is an increasing interest in global perspectives. Our fields of study are the early modern and modern periods (i.e. since around 1500 with a special emphasis on contemporary history, 19th and 20th centuries).
Teaching
The Department of History plays an important role in the Arts and Culture as well as in the European Studies programs of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, both at the BA and the MA levels. Some of its members regularly teach in other faculties of Maastricht University and at University College Maastricht. Moreover, we are involved in the education of PhD students. History is thus a central component of the faculty’s interdisciplinary mix.
Research
Members of the Department of History are associated to the following research schools: N.W. Posthumus Institute (for Economic and Social History), the Huizinga Institute (for Cultural History), the Graduate School for Political History and the Netherlands Graduate Research School of Science, Technology and Modern Culture (WTMC). Its Dutch and international PhD students are also involved in the Graduate School of the faculty.
While sharing an interest in core problems of modern and contemporary European history, all faculty members are involved in specific research projects. For details, please see the individual members’ websites.
