Double degree
As of the academic year 2011/2012, the Research Master’s programme European Studies will offer a double degree together with the University of Cologne. This double degree agreement will make it possible for students to obtain two separate master's degrees in European Studies from each of the two universities. Students admitted to the double degree track will follow the first year of the Research Master European Studies at Maastricht University. In the second year, they will complete modules in the master’s programme Political Science at the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne. The modules are: European Politics, European Comparative Politics, the Master Colloquium and the writing of the master’s thesis, which will be jointly supervised by professors of both institutions.
The Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne is one of the largest in Germany with more than 10,000 students. It offers a vast scope of study fields and specializations. All study programs are accredited by the German accreditation organization AQAS. The faculty is ranked in the top group in various national and international rankings.
Students graduating with this double degree will be well prepared for the demands of an international labour market in European Studies, which increasingly expects graduates to have studied in more than one country. The research-oriented nature of the degree means that graduates are likely to move on to either doctoral research or to research-related work in think tanks, NGOs, etc. These are professional dimensions which require familiarity with a variety of different academic cultures and graduates from the double-degree will therefore be better prepared for this kind of work than most of their peers with degrees from a single university.
