Admissions

As enrolment numbers are limited, admission is highly competitive and based on merit as assessed by the Board of Admissions.


Admissions Requirements:


  • a bachelor’s degree from a European Studies programme or a relevant academic field (political science, international relations, international law, international economics, contemporary history, cultural studies) which shows a strong base of knowledge of European history, the European policy process, the institutional structure of the European Union and theories and methods of social and political science
  • non-native speakers or applicants who have their undergraduate degree in a language other than English must have one of the following language qualifications:
    • IELTS with a minimum score of 7.0
    • TOEFL with a minimum score of 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based) and 100 (internet-based)
    • Cambridge Proficiency Certificate (grade A, B, C)
    • Cambridge Advanced Certificate (grade A, B+)

Students who have not yet completed the bachelor's programme should send a copy of their most recent list of grades with the application. Successful candidates will be admitted on a conditional basis. A certified hard copy of your diploma - or a declaration of graduation: stating the (expected) graduation date and the expected date your diploma will be presented - must be received before the start of the master's programme.


Required documents

The following documents must be submitted with your application:


  • a certified transcript of academic records (with certified translation for languages other than English, Dutch, German or French)
  • a description of your bachelor programme
  • a letter of motivation indicating why you have chosen the Research Master European Studies at Maastricht University, why you expect that you will be able to complete the programme successfully, and what you feel you can contribute to the field
  • two examples of work done in preparation for your bachelor's degree
  • a photocopy of your valid passport or EU ID-card
  • a recent passport photo
  • a copy of your IELTS/TOEFL iBT results (if applicable)
  • your curriculum vitae

Double degree


Students who wish to enrol in the double degree track (first year of the Research Master European Studies at Maastricht University, second year at the University of Cologne in the master’s programme Political Science), need to indicate this in their motivation letter when applying. Their application will be assessed by the Boards of Admissions of both Maastricht University and the University of Cologne.
