European Studies on Society, Science and Technology: on governance and cultures of innovation

The European Studies on Society, Science and Technology (ESST) master's programme on the governance and cultures of innovations explores the foundations and impact of science and technology by examining the values, language, history, politics and economics of modern technological and scientific society. The programme combines the scientific and technical disciplines with the humanities and social sciences to explore the interrelated worlds of the scientist, engineer, politician and citizen.  Furthermore, the programme's global, multicultural and environmentally conscious perspectives develop ethical awareness and public responsibility.

The application and spread of new innovations in science and technology affect many areas of society. During the programme you will learn how to gather the information you need to make decisions such as:

  • economic decisions involving the costs and benefits of technology
  • political decisions to commit public funds or to support research and development
  • cultural decisions involving ethical issues leading to the rejection or adoption of innovation

This is a one-year joint degree programme taught in English. Graduates will get two diplomas, one from Maastricht University and one from the European Inter-University Association on Society, Science and Technology.
