European Studies
The Master of Arts in European Studies focuses on the international dimensions of policy, governance and administration. The programme looks beyond the institutions of the European Union and the mechanics of European integration to examine global developments and multi-level governance in a broader context. The programme employs an interdisciplinary approach, combining political science, history, international relations, economics and cultural studies. The focus is on the underlying issues of power and influence, governance and culture.
The programme offers three tracks:
- European International Politics, concentrating on the international position and politics of the European Union (EU) as a political entity
- European Politics and Administration, focusing on the political and administrative mechanisms and balances between the institutions of the European Union, its member states and civil societies
- Europe from a global perspective, focusing on Europe and its member states’ shifting role on the world stage in parallel to the process of decolonization, economic internationalization and globalization.
This is a one-year international Master of Arts programme, taught in English.
The faculty has a permanent research programme centred around administrative governance and the role of the EU in the world. These topics make up the core of the curriculum. Staff members are active in both national networks (such as the Netherlands Institute of Governance) and international research communities (such as CONNEX), contributing regularly to academic debate in international peer-reviewed journals. Accordingly, the programme has a strong political and analytical orientation.
