Politics and Society
Multiculturalism. Integration. Neopopulism. Meritocracy. These are some of the hottest topics around today, and they are all addressed in this programme. The common thread: how culture has become a source of concern and conflict in the national and international political arenas.
This is not a programme where you’ll be stuck in Politics 101, answering questions like ‘So what is national identity?’ Instead, you’ll be expected to engage intelligently with some of the biggest sociopolitical issues of our time: What is the meaning of citizenship in modern culture? The role of political intellectuals? The value of democracy? The future of liberty itself? Given the present international backdrop of cultural conflicts, political strife and radical new technologies, a thorough understanding of such issues is more urgently needed than ever.
Meet the Director of Studies
Watch this interview and hear what Prof. Sjaak Koenis, the Director of Studies of this master's programme, has to say about Politics and Society. Please note that at the time of making this video, the programme was still called "Arts and Sciences" (a combination of the two current programmes Art, Literature and Society and Politics and Society).
Important information for applicants: As of September 2012, all master’s programmes in the field of the humanities at Dutch universities are subject to so-called “broad master’s labels”. The background of this operation is that at this point in time, there are over 250 master’s programmes in the humanities field offered throughout the Netherlands. To make the range of master’s programmes in the humanities more structured and less confusing to prospective students, all Dutch universities have agreed to file their master’s under overarching labels.
The implementation of the broad master labels will not have any influence on the content of the programmes. It is, however, important to know which label applies to the master’s programme of your choice since this is the name that will appear in Studielink and My UM when you apply.
Moreover, the implementation of the labels will affect the diploma you receive upon graduation. Both the label and the programme name will appear on your diploma.
The master’s programme Politics and Society is filed under the label Arts & Culture (CROHO code 60087, track 1606_T6).
More information on how to apply: please click on "admissions" in the menu on the left-hand side.
