Enrolment numbers for this programme are limited. Admission is based on merit as assessed by the Board of Admissions.
Admissions requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in the field of Social Sciences (Anthropology, Sociology, Geography, Economics, Political science, International Relations, Development Studies, European Studies, Liberal Arts and Sciences), or humanities (History, Philosophy, Arts and Culture), or an equivalent level of relevant education or working experience.
- A high quality of performance in prior education.
- A basis in globalisation and development issues (e.g. minor in Globalisation & Development from the Maastricht University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, or similar undergraduate courses).
- A basis in social science research methods, covering both qualitative and quantitative methods.
- A high level of motivation for studying issues of globalisation and development as reflected in a letter of motivation which states the purpose and reasons why the applicant wishes to study the Master's Programme in Globalisation and Development Studies.
- Proficiency in English (non-native speakers must have a minimum score of 6.5 on the IELTS, or 575 (paper-based), 233 (computer-based) and 90 (internet-based) on the TOEFL, or a Cambridge Proficiency Certificate (grade A, B, C), or Cambridge Advanced Certificate (grade A, B, C+). Native English speakers and students who have successfully completed an English-spoken Bachelor's or Master's degree are exempted from this requirement.

- a certified copy of your bachelor certificate and list of grades (with certified translation for languages other than English, Dutch, German or French)
- a specimen of writing from your bachelor studies
- copy of your IELTS/TOEFL iBT results (if applicable)
- your curriculum vitae
- a motivation letter (between 800 and 1200 words in length)
- two letters of recommendation
Students who have not yet completed the bachelor's programme should send a copy of their most recent list of grades with the application. Successful candidates will be admitted on a conditional basis. A certified hard copy of your diploma - or a declaration of graduation: stating the (expected) graduation date and the expected date your diploma will be presented - must be received before the start of the master's programme.
