Programme information

The programme explores the governance and cultures of innovation of contemporary societies, with particular focus on scientific and technological development. Such controversial arenas as biotechnology, genetics, sustainable technology, climate change, biodiversity, the globalisation of economics, and technology transfer are explored from various perspectives. This illuminate the way they shape our activities and our daily lives – for example, their impact on mobility patterns, gender, telecommunications, and standardised practices in healthcare and family planning.

In the context of the programme, governance is more than just the activities of formal political authorities. It is the whole set of arrangements and procedures through which the developments of science and technology are monitored and controlled. An important question is how we can contribute to some sort of democratic control of science and technology development, while at the same time using these developments to help solve some of the pressing problems of our complex modern societies.

This master's programme is designed to train a new generation of academics and professionals who understand how the laboratory, the factory and the market work together.  It provides a systematic framework in which the implications and consequences of these relationships can be explored and understood. The programme provides for:

  • political and cultural analysis of the modern knowledge society
  • social and economic analysis of different cultures of innovations
  • ethical reflection on scientific and technological development

The programme uses an interdisciplinary approach, employing perspectives from political studies, cultural studies, innovations studies and social studies.
