Programme information

This programme offers an in-depth, inter-disciplinary study of the external and internal political aspects of European policy- and decision-making. The particular focus is on the activity of the EU and other international organisations. The curriculum focuses on institutional roles and influence, governance arrangements and policy-making processes. It offers a choice between three specialisations.

During the programme you will develop your understanding of the European Union in a global context. You will examine the delicate balance between diverse national traditions. Students are able to build on their knowledge of Europe and the European Union. They also refine their skills in carrying out research, writing, and making comprehensive political analysis.

The programme is divided into six modules. The first module on 'Post-War Europe: Political and Societal Transformations’ and third module on 'The EU as an International Player' are followed by all students. In the final eight-week module students dedicate themselves fully to researching and writing their thesis.

The remaining three modules are taken according to the specialisation chosen:

  • European International Politics
  • European Politics and Administration
  • Europe from a Global Perspective

All students research and write a master’s thesis of 12,000 to 15,000 words. Since the taught courses and thesis run for 10 months, the programme does not include an internship. However, many students organise a work placement or training for the end of the course, either in July and August or in the autumn period after they have graduated, including the official internships at the EU institutions such as the European Commission (click here for the external link).

The Master European Studies (MA ES) programme begins with an introduction day in the last week of August. Teaching begins in the first week of September. Students submit their thesis in the last week of June.
