Admissions

There are several pathways into the MA European Studies. How to apply will depend on what kind of education you have at bachelor level and what type of degree you are studying. Please see the tables below, which distinguish between external applicants and applicants from Maastricht.



External applicants that graduated or are about to graduate with:
Applicant Advice
A university bachelor degree (BA or BSc) in European Studies or a social science subject (e.g. politics, history, law, economics, international relations, public administration) and/or have followed some modules on European Union Apply for admission in September 2012 via Studielink (deadline 1 April for non-EU students; 1 June for EU students).
A university bachelor degree (BA or BSc) in a subject that is not closely related to European Studies or which did not have modules on the European Union (e.g. business studies, translation and interpreting, languages) You can apply for admission in September 2012 via Studielink (deadline 1 April for non-EU students; 1 June for EU students) but should first contact the Director of Studies, Dr. Paul Stephenson, to discuss your educational profile and whether you would benefit from following the pre-master (60 ECTS, one year).
A bachelor degree in European Studies or other subject from a Dutch hogeschool (HBO). In exceptional circumstances applicants with professional experience since their studies may be admitted directly. You should follow the pre-master (60 ECTS, one year). Please contact Ingrid Regout in the admissions office. You may also wish to discuss your educational profile with the Director of Studies, Dr. P. Stephenson.
Applicants from UM that graduated or are about to graduate with:
Applicant Advice
A bachelor European Studies from FASoS You are guaranteed a place on the programme and can apply via Studielink at any time until 1 September. For planning purposes, please contact Ingrid Regout in the admissions office as early as possible to inform her of your intention to follow the programme
A different bachelor degree from FASoS or other faculties You should apply via Studielink by 1 June


Academic Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree from a European Studies programme OR a relevant academic field (political science, international relations, law, economics, history, cultural studies), which has provided students with prior knowledge of contemporary European history, the integration process, and institutions of the European Union. Some previous insight into theories and methods of social and political science is essential.

Students who have not yet completed the bachelor's programme should send a copy of their most recent list of grades with the application. Successful candidates will be admitted on a conditional basis. A certified hard copy of your diploma - or a declaration of graduation: stating the (expected) graduation date and the expected date your diploma will be presented - must be received before the start of the master's programme.


Language requirements:

Non-native speakers or applicants who have their undergraduate degree in a language other than English must have one of the following language qualifications:
  • IELTS with a minimum score of 6.5
  • TOEFL with a minimum score of 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based) and 90 (internet-based)
  • Cambridge Proficiency Certificate (grade A, B, C)
  • Cambridge Advanced Certificate (grade A, B+)

Required documents:

The following documents must be submitted with your application via Studielink:

  • a certified transcript of academic records (with certified translation for languages other than English, Dutch, German or French)
  • a description of your bachelor programme
  • a motivation letter discussing:
    1. your particular interests in European Studies and/or the EU
    2. which of the three specialisations in the programme you wish to follow and why
    3. what topic you think you might like to research for your masters thesis
    4. how you feel you are qualified to follow the programme (particularly important for those coming from disciplines other than social science)
  • a photocopy of your valid passport or EU ID-card
  • a recent passport photo
  • a copy of your IELTS/TOEFL iBT results (if applicable)
  • your curriculum vitae
  • two letters of recommendation from a professor or employer, on headed paper with an original signature

Being offered a place

Successful candidates will be admitted on a conditional basis. A certified hard copy of your diploma should be sent to the university by 1 September, or the original presented on the introduction day. In the meantime, a declaration of graduation, stating the (expected) graduation date and expected date your diploma can be included in your application. Evidence of a sufficient language test score must be submitted before any conditional offer can be made.
