Bas Steins Bisschop studeerde rechten aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (1974) en aan New York University (1975). Hij is advocaat sinds 1975 met een specialisatie in Corporate Law. Hij promoveerde in 1991 op een proefschrift over de beperkte houdbaarheid van beschermingsmaatregelen bij naamloze vennootschappen tegen betwiste overnames.
In 2000 werd hij benoemd tot hoogleraar ondernemingsrecht aan de Nyenrode Business Universiteit. In 2007 werd hij benoemd tot Bijzonder Hoogleraar Corporate Law and Corporate Governance aan de Universiteit Maastricht. Bas Steins Bisschop combineert de advocatuurlijke praktijk met het academische werk. Bij dit laatste ligt de nadruk op ondernemingsrecht in het algemeen en meer in het bijzonder op juridische vraagstukken met betrekking tot Corporate Governance en maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen. Hij publiceert regelmatig boeken en artikelen in juridische tijdschriften. In zijn inaugurele rede voor de Universiteit Maastricht in 2008 introduceerde hij nieuwe en alternatieve theorieën en toepassingen op het gebied van bescherming tegen niet geïnviteerde overnames en ongewenst aandeelhoudersactivisme.
Aan Nyenrode Business Universiteit is hij verantwoordelijk voor onderzoek en voor juridische onderwijs aan de Business School en de School of Accountancy. Hij geeft onderwijs in deze en andere onderwijsprogramma’s van Nyenrode. Aan de Universiteit Maastricht geeft hij onderwijs in en coördineert hij het Masterblok Comparative Corporate Governance. Daarnaast is hij senior onderzoeker van de Ius Commune Onderzoeksschool, mede-oprichter van en professorial fellow bij het Institute for Corporate Law, Governance and Innovation Policies (ICGI). Tevens geeft hij onderwijs in diverse Bachelor en Master blokken en executive blokken van de Faculteit der Rechtsgeleerdheid en andere faculteiten van de Universiteit Maastricht.

Bas Steins Bisschop studied law at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (1974) and at New York University (1975). He practices law with a specialization in corporate law since 1975. He completed his PhD in 1991 on the limited enforceability of defenses employed by listed companies against uninvited takeovers.
In 2000 he was appointed Professor of Corporate Law at Nyenrode Business University. In 2007 he was appointed Professor by Special Appointment of Corporate Law and Corporate Governance at Maastricht University. Bas Steins Bisschop combines the law practice with research which focuses on corporate law in general and on specific legal issues concerning corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. He regularly publishes books and articles in legal journals. In his inaugural speech for Maastricht University 2008 he has introduced new and alternative theories and practices in the field of defenses against uninvited takeovers and undesired activist shareholders.
He is responsible for the legal education at Nyenrode’s Business School and Nyenrode’s School of Accountancy and teaches in these and other Nyenrode programs. At Maastricht University he lectures and coordinates the Master course Comparative Corporate Governance, is a senior researcher of the Ius Commune Research School, is co-founder of and professorial fellow at the Institute for Corporate Law, Governance and Innovation Policies (ICGI) and teaches in various Bachelor and Master courses and executive courses both in the law school and in other schools of Maastricht University.
