Curriculum Vitae
Sarah Schoenmaekers studied law at the European Law School of Maastricht University. After graduating in 2005, she passed the Flemish Bar exam and began her career as a lawyer in Belgium. In the meantime she wrote her PhD dissertation about  the regulation of architects in Belgium and the Netherlands.  Since 2009 she works as a lecturer at Maastricht and Hasselt University.

Sarah Schoenmaekers’ principal area of interest is the future of European integration. She mainly focusses on the free movement of EU and third-country nationals (particularly the recognition of diplomas) and EU competition law. In her research she also applies law and economics analyss to determine whether regulations are efficient.

Sarah Schoenmaekers is a scholar of the Maastricht Centre for European Law, and also a member of the Ius Commune Research School and the Institute for Transnational Legal Research (METRO). She is the coordinator of several courses such as ‘International and European law’, ‘Introduction to law’and ‘Discovery of Europe’.

At Maastricht and Hasselt University, Sarah Schoenmaekers teaches ‘EU Substantive Law’ and  ‘International and European Law’. She also teaches ‘Legal Writing’ and ‘European Integration for Tax Lawyers’ at Maastricht University. She is a visiting scholar at the Centre for European and Political Studies in Maastricht where she teaches ‘European Law and Politics’.
