Trained in philosophy and Logic in Scotland, Rijgersberg started his career in academic publishing at Kluwer Academic Publishers before conducting professional research at Egon Zehnder International. During his professional activities he read Law in Leiden before joining the University of Groningen to obtain a PhD in Law at the department of Legal Theory.

In his thesis Rijgersberg explored the implications of globalization for democratic constitutional governance, using the Internet as a lens to examine the effects of globalization for modern governance.

At the Netherlands Institute for International Relations ‘Clingendael’ he continued his research on the effects of a changing trans-national environment for territorial or state-based governance resulting in his monograph ‘The State of Interdependence’ (2010, Asser Press).

His current position as Assistant Professor Foundations and Methods of Law allows him to combine both his legal and philosophical interests.
