Curriculum vitae
Prof. dr. C.H. (Remco) van Rhee (1968) was appointed to the Chair of European Legal History in 1998.
He served for several years as the head of the Metajuridica Department of the Maastricht University Law School and as Academic Director of the Maastricht University European Law School.
Van Rhee studied Law at the universities of Leiden and Edinburgh, Psychology at the university of Leiden, and History at the university of Louvain. In 1997 he was awarded his doctorate cum laude at Leiden University.
He taught Roman Law at the university of Leiden (1991-1994) and Property and Civil Procedure at the university of Utrecht (Molengraaff Institute for European Private Law, 1994-1998).
He was a visiting professor at various universities in Belgium, the USA, South Africa, the Ukraine, Romania, Hungary, Hong Kong, China and Moldova. He also taught at the Duke-Geneva Summer School in Geneva.
His research focuses, amongst other things, on comparative civil procedure and its history in Europe and the United States.

Van Rhee is director of the research programme "Foundations and Principles of Civil Procedure in Europe" and former director of the programme "Foundations of European Private Law" of the Ius Commune Research School (www.rechten.unimaas.nl/ozic/). He is chairman of the Working Group on the History of Civil Procedure sponsored by the German Gerda Henkel Foundation. Additionally, he is general editor of the Civil Procedure Casebook of the Ius Commune Casebooks for the Common Law of Europe (www.casebooks.eu/procedural) and a member of the board of editors of the series Studies in the History of Private Law (http://www.brill.nl/default.aspx?partid=227&pid=29700).
Van Rhee is co-director of an annual course on Public and Private Justice organized at the Inter-University Centre Dubrovnik (Croatia) (http://www.iuc.hr/c_list.php).
His publications include "Litigation and Legislation. Civil Procedure at the Great Council of the Netherlands in Malines (1522-1559)", a study of the application of the Romano-canonical procedure at the former superior court of the Low Countries. In 1997 this study was awarded the Prix d’Excellence by the Praemium Erasmianum Foundation(www.erasmusprijs.org/eng/index.htm).
