Curriculum vitae
Anke Moerland is a PhD candidate in the European and International Law Department, Maastricht University and a PhD fellow of the Institute for Globalisation and International Regulation (IGIR). She holds a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Technical University Dresden, Germany, and obtained a LLM degree (cum laude) from the Magister Juris Communis Programme, Maastricht University, in 2006.
Her research focuses on the international protection of intellectual property. Anke is particularly interested in the different levels of IP protection agreed upon in bilateral agreements that are concluded by the European Union on the one hand, and the protection agreed upon at the multilateral level (the TRIPS Agreement) on the other hand. She uses a multidisciplinary approach of combining legal and political scientist research methods. The aim of the study is to first analyze the different levels of protection that exist in bilateral and multilateral agreements. Second, the study will focus on the influence of interest groups on the decision-making process in developing countries. Anke will examine which interest groups promote different levels of protection of IP and how they influence the policy-making process, both at the bilateral and the multilateral level. The developing countries chosen as case-studies are most likely going to be: the Cariforum, the Andean countries and India. The aim of the research is to provide a recent analysis of the European Union’s approach towards the protection of IP in foreign countries and to enable a better understanding of how IP-related interest groups in developing countries work and how they influence the policy-decisions with regard to IP, both at the multilateral and the bilateral level.
Anke has taught different European Law Courses, such as European Institutions, European Substantive Law, Introduction to International and European Law and some sessions in External Relations of the European Union. She is currently teaching courses on Intellectual Property Law.
