Curriculum vitae

Dr. Gary Low is Assistant Professor of Law at the Private Law department of Maastricht University, and the Academic Coordinator for the Maastricht European Private Law Institute (M-EPLI). After three years as a subaltern in the Singapore Armed Forces, Gary read for law at the London School of Economics. He took his LL.B with First Class Honours. Subsequently, he went up to Oxford University, and came down in 2004 with a BCL with Distinction. His PhD, awarded in 2011 at Maastricht University, was supported by the Hague Institute for the Internationalisation of Law (HiiL).

Prior to joining Maastricht University, Gary was a Justices’ Law Clerk of the Supreme Court of Singapore (2005 to 2007).  A common lawyer by training, he practised shipping law, commercial litigation and international commercial arbitration at the Singapore bar between 2007 and 2008.  Gary was from 2008 to 2010 a Fellow of the Tilburg Institute of Comparative and Transnational Law. He was also Visiting Scholar at Cornell Law School in the Winter/Spring of 2010.

Gary’s interests include contract law of both the consumer and commercial varieties, as well as international commercial arbitration. He is particularly keen on research  from the perspective of behavioural law and economics, and involving an empirical element, and has published in journals like the European Review of Private Law and the European Journal of Law and Economics. He is available for undergraduate and postgraduate supervision in these areas.

At present, he teaches a variety of contract and commercial law courses at the Maastricht Faculty of Law, and co-coaches the Willem C Vis moot team.
