Achtergrond. Sybren de Hoo studeerde civiele techniek aan de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten en Technische Wetenschappen te Rotterdam en sociologie/milieukunde aan de Universiteit van Leiden (cum laude). Vanaf het begin van de jaren zeventig loopt het nastreven van duurzame ontwikkeling en maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen als een rode draad door zijn activiteiten. Inmiddels ligt zijn focus op het proces waarin duurzame ontwikkeling vanuit de periferie van organisaties naar hun strategie en kernbusiness wordt gebracht en zichtbaar wordt in de karakteristieken van hun missie, strategie, governance en besluitvormingsprocessen alsook in de effecten daarvan op vorm en inhoud van business modellen, productieprocessen, producten, diensten en innovaties.
Huidige posities. Sybren de Hoo is hoogleraar Maatschappelijk Verantwoord Ondernemen en Innovatie (vanaf 2004) aan het Athena Instituut van de Faculteit Aard en Levenswetenschappen van de Vrije Universiteit. Sinds juni 2010 vervult hij eveneens een leerstoel Corporate Social Responsibility and Innovation aan de Faculteit Rechtsgeleerdheid van de Universiteit van Maastricht. Sybren de Hoo is daar vanaf de ontwerpfase actief betrokken bij het Instituut voor Corporate Law, Governance and Innovation Policies (ICGI) van de Juridische Faculteit van de Universiteit van Maastricht en is daar inmiddels ook als Professorial Fellow verbonden. Samen met collega Prof. Mr. A.J.A.J. Eijsbouts is hij verantwoordelijk voor de ontwikkeling van het kernvak Corporate Social Responsibility in het internationale masterprogramma Globalization and Law. Zijn meest recente publicatie is: Prof. S.C. de Hoo, e.a., Duurzaam Ondernemen: een onderzoek naar effectieve stimulering, verbreding en verankering, Vrije Universiteit, Oktober 2010, 110 pag.
Op dit moment is hij bestuurslid van de Stichting FACT (die toepassingen van duurzame energie in lokale gemeenschappen in ontwikkelingslanden bevordert), lid van de Jury van het Fair Trade Gemeenten programma en lid van de adviesraad voor onderzoek en onderwijs duurzaam ondernemen van de Hogeschool Windesheim. Sybren de Hoo is tevens directeur (sinds 1991) van een eigen adviesbureau (PRISMA EPC bv.)
Arbeidsverleden. Sybren de Hoo heeft afwisselend in binnen en buitenland (in Frankrijk bij de VN te Parijs) en in China (als ontwerper/adviseur voor de VN en Wereldbank in schoner produceren programma’s op diverse locaties) gewerkt. Hij heeft zowel binnen overheden, onderzoek gerelateerde adviesorganen (WRR en NOTA/Rathenau Instituut) als in het bedrijfsleven gewerkt aan uiteenlopende vraagstukken op het gebied van energie, milieu en duurzame ontwikkeling. Hij heeft daarbij verschillende functies bekleed zoals die van constructeur/ontwerper, onderzoeker, adviseur, manager, directeur en bestuurder. Hij is werkzaam geweest bij Rijkswaterstaat (vanaf 1972), het Sociologisch Instituut van de Universiteit Leiden (vanaf 1976), de Stuurgroep Brede Maatschappelijke Discussie Energiebeleid (vanaf 1981), de staf van de Wetenschappelijke Raad voor het Regeringsbeleid (vanaf 1984), het directoraat Wetenschapsbeleid van het Ministerie van Onderwijs en Wetenschappen (vanaf 1987) als overgang naar de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Technology Assessment (NOTA) het latere Rathenau Instituut (eveneens vanaf 1987), het United Nations Industry and Environment Office in Parijs (vanaf 1993) en Rabobank Groep (vanaf 1997). Hij heeft met zijn werkzaamheden verschillende prijzen gewonnen waaronder: de Teylers’ Prijs voor het beste professionele milieuproject PRISMA (persoonlijk 1991); verscheidene malen met zijn teams, zoals: de ACC Award voor het beste Duurzaamheidjaarverslag (voor Rabobank Groep), de UN/Royal Sustainability Award (voor Rabobank Groep 2004) en de Runners Up positie in de Financial Times Sustainability Award (voor Rabobank 2007).
Sybren de Hoo heeft zich naast zijn werkzaamheden ook in het verleden als bestuurder voor verschillende maatschappelijke organisaties ingezet. Zo was hij bijvoorbeeld meerdere jaren voorzitter van het Landelijk Milieu Overleg, de Zuid Hollandse Milieufederatie en de koepel van de Provinciale Milieufederaties alsook bestuurslid van het Centrum voor Energiebesparing, het Afval Overleg Orgaan, de Advisory Board van het UN Industry and Environment Programma in Parijs, enzovoorts.

Background. Sybren de Hoo studied Civil Engineering at The Academy of Arts and Technical Sciences in Rotterdam, The Netherlands as well as Sociology - including Environmental Sciences - (cum laude) at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands. He designed, managed and executed practices and research with respect to those changes needed to bring about and accelerate sustainable development in non-governmental organizations, governmental organizations as well as the business community. In particular it shows how sustainable development moves from the periphery to the core of organizations and which changes as a result occur in mission, strategy, policy, governance and key decision making processes as well as their impacts on business models, production processes, products, services and last but not least innovations.
Current positions. Sybren de Hoo was appointed Professor Corporate Sustainability and Innovation (2004) at the Vrije Universiteit, lately located at the Athena Institute of the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences. Since June 2010 he was appointed also Professor Corporate Social Responsibility and Innovation at the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University. Sybren de Hoo has been actively involved in the design of the new Institute for Corporate Law, Governance and Innovation Policies (ICGI) at the Law Faculty of Maastricht University and became a Professorial Fellow of ICGI after its inception.
In close cooperation with his colleague Prof. Mr. A.J.A.J. Eijsbouts he is responsible for the design and execution of the core course Corporate Social Responsibility in the International Master Program Globalization and Law. Sybren de Hoo is a board member of the FACT Foundation (which promotes the application of sustainable energy solutions within local communities in developing countries), member of the Jury of the Fair Trade City Program and member of the Advisory Board for sustainable entrepreneurship education and research at Hogeschool Windesheim.
Sybren de Hoo is director (since 1991) of his own consultancy company (PRISMA EPC b.v.).
Employment record. Sybren de Hoo worked mainly within The Netherlands but also quite some years abroad. He worked in France at the UN Industry and Environment Office in Paris and in China at various locations as a designer/advisor/manager of cleaner production programs on behalf of the UN and Worldbank. He worked within government organizations, research and advisory boards, non-governmental organizations and companies. He did hold positions and responsibilities as a construction engineer/designer, researcher, advisor, manager, director and board member. He did hold successively positions in: Rijkswaterstaat (from 1972), the Institute of Sociology at the University of Leiden (from 1976), the Steering Committee Brede Maatschappelijke Discussie Energiebeleid (from 1981), Scientific Council for Government Policy (from 1984), the Science Policy department within the Ministry of Education and Sciences (from 1986) in order to establish and join the Dutch Organization of Technology Assessment (from 1987) nowadays called the Rathenau Institute, the United Nations Industry and Environment Office in Paris (from 1993) and the Sustainable Development Directorate of Rabobank Group (from 1997).
Sybren de Hoo has been personally awarded with the Dutch Teylers’ Award for the best professional environment project PRISMA (1991) and various times for results of his team(s). For example multiple times the ACC Award for the best Dutch Sustainability Report (Rabobank Group), the UN/Royal Sustainability Award (Rabobank Group 2004) and Runner Up Position in the Financial Times Sustainable Bank of the Year Award (a Rabobank Group achievement in 2008). Over the years Sybren de Hoo has served as the chairman or a member of the board of various Dutch (non-governmental) organizations working in the area of environment and energy policy.
