The Research Field:
The working title of the Ph.D. dissertation is State Collapse and Human Rights. A collapsed state is a state without a government able to exercise control over its territory. Persons residing within such a state are particularly vulnerable to human rights abuses. The purpose of this project is to contribute to the improvement of the human rights of persons residing within a collapsed state by way of an empirical study of Somalia; an analysis of state failure under general international law and international human rights law; and an examination of the possibilities of holding non-state actors accountable for human rights abuses committed on the territory of a failed state.
