Curriculum vitae
Dimitri Droshout studied law at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. After his graduation in 1999 he joined the Research Unit for Economic Law of the same university; first as a research fellow at the Institute for Commercial Law and Insurance Law and since 2001 as deputy director of the Leuven Centre for a Common Law of Europe (Leuven CCLE). He also is a part-time lecturer at the Maastricht Institute for Transnational Legal Research (METRO).
His main research interests are the relationship between law and the realm of science and technology, tort law in a European and comparative perspective and the methodology of comparative legal research. He is currently preparing a PhD thesis on normalization and standardisation in the framework of a research programme of the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). In the past, he contributed inter alia to various projects of the European Group on Tort Law and the Vienna-based European Centre for Tort and Insurance Law (ECTIL), to an FWO project on the insurability of long-tail liabilities and to a European study on virtual enterprises.
He is the scientific coordinator of the Ius Commune Casebook Project, a joint initiative of the universities of Leuven and Maastricht under the general editorship of Prof. W van Gerven. In that capacity he guides various international teams which develop new Casebooks, inter alia on tort law, contract law, anti-discrimination law, property law, consumer law and civil procedure. In Maastricht he taught a course on European Tort Law. He is co-editor of the van Gerven Lectures and an external member of the editorial board of the Tilburg Foreign Law Review.

Dimitri Droshout studeerde rechten aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven en is sinds 1999 verbonden aan de Onderzoekseenheid Economisch Recht van dezelfde universiteit, eerst als wetenschappelijk medewerker van het Instituut Handels- en Verzekeringsrecht en sinds 2001 als deputy director van het “Leuven Centre for a Common Law of Europe (Leuven CCLE)”. Hij is als universitair docent tevens werkzaam bij het Maastrichts Instituut voor Transnationaal Rechtswetenschappelijk Onderzoek (METRO).
Onderzoeksmatig richt hij zich op de relatie tussen het recht en de sfeer van wetenschap en techniek, op aansprakelijkheidsrecht in een Europees en rechtsvergelijkend perspectief en op de methodologie van rechtsvergelijkend onderzoek. Momenteel bereidt hij een proefschrift voor over normalisatie en standaardisatie in het kader van een FWO Onderzoeksproject. In het verleden verleende hij o.a. medewerking aan projecten van de “European Group on Tort Law” en het Weense “European Centre for Tort and Insurance Law (ECTIL)”, aan een FWO project over de verzekerbaarheid van langetermijnaansprakelijkheden en aan een Europese studie over virtuele ondernemingen.
Hij is wetenschappelijk coördinator van het “Ius Commune Casebook Project”, een gezamenlijk initiatief van de K.U.Leuven en de Universiteit Maastricht, dat werd opgezet door Prof. W van Gerven. In die hoedanigheid begeleidt hij diverse internationale werkgroepen die nieuwe Casebooks voorbereiden, o.a. over buitencontractueel aansprakelijkheidsrecht, contractenrecht, antidiscriminatierecht, goederenrecht, consumentenrecht en civiel procesrecht. Te Maastricht doceerde hij “European Tort Law”. Hij is co-editor van de van Gerven Lectures en extern lid van de redactie van het “Tilburg Foreign Law Review”.
