Curriculum Vitae
A.P.A. (Ton) BROEDERS (MA, PhD) received an MA degree in English Language and Linguistics from the University of Nijmegen, where he subsequently taught Phonetics and Linguistics from 1972-1988. He spent the academic year 1986-1987 as a Visiting Scholar at the Graduate School of the City University of New York and the University of California, Berkeley.
In 1988 he was asked to set up a forensic phonetics and linguistics facility at the Netherlands Forensic Institute, the Forensic Science Laboratory of the Dutch Ministry of Justice in Rijswijk (now The Hague), where he was subsequently appointed Head of the Department of Handwriting, Speech and Document Examination (1996-2001) and held the position of Chief Scientist (2002-2007). He is a founder member and former Executive Committee member of IAFPA (International Association for Forensic Phonetics and Acoustics) and from 1998 to 2002 was the (first) chair of the ENFSI Expert Working Group for Forensic Speech and Audio Analysis
In 2003 he received his PhD from the University of Leiden for a dissertation entitled In Search of the Source: An Exploration of the Basic Principles of Criminalistics and the Evaluation of Forensic Evidence, for which he was awarded the Prof. A.E.J. Modderman Prize for criminal law dissertations in 2006. In 2004 he was appointed to the chair of Criminalistics at the University of Leiden. In 2007 he was also appointed Professor of Criminalistics at the University of Maastricht, where he is setting up the Maastricht University Forensic Institute. His publications deal with a variety of subjects ranging from forensic phonetics and linguistics to forensic science and the evaluation and interpretation of forensic evidence in general. He was Reporting Officer for the 13th and 14th Interpol Forensic Science Symposiums for the field of Forensic Acoustics and Linguistics in 2001 and 2004 and is a member of the editorial board of The International Journal of Speech, Language and the Law. In addition to acting as court-appointed expert in hundreds of cases in the Netherlands, he has testified in Mauritius and for the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague (twice).

A.P.A. (Ton) BROEDERS bezocht het Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Lyceum in Breda, waar hij het diploma Gymnasium B behaalde, en studeerde in 1972 (cum laude) af in de Engelse Taal- en Letterkunde aan de Radboud Universiteit te Nijmegen. Het academisch jaar 1986-1987 bracht hij door als Visiting Scholar aan de Graduate School van de City University van New York en de Universiteit van Californië in Berkeley. In 1971 trad hij in dienst van de Radboud Universiteit, waar hij zich tot 1988 bezighield met onderwijs en onderzoek op het gebied van de fonetiek, taalvariatie, sociolinguïstiek en lexicografie.
In 1988 trad hij in dienst van het toenmalige Gerechtelijk Laboratorium (GL) in Rijswijk, waar hij een sectie forensisch spraak- en audio-onderzoek opzette. In 1992 werd hij beëdigd als vast gerechtelijk deskundige, in welke hoedanigheid hij de afgelopen jaren honderden schriftelijke rapportages pro justitia heeft uitgebracht op het terrein van de sprekeridentificatie, de identificatie van sprekers door oorgetuigen, het audio-onderzoek, waaronder de verstaanbaarheidsverbetering en het authenticiteits- en integriteitsonderzoek van audio-opnamen, en de linguïstische tekstanalyse. Hij trad op als gerechtelijk deskundige in Mauritius, tweemaal voor het zogenaamde Joegoslavië-tribunaal (International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia) in Den Haag en tientallen malen voor Nederlandse gerechten.
In 1996 werd hij hoofd van de afdeling Schrift-, Spraak- en Documentonderzoek. In 2002 volgde zijn benoeming tot Chief Scientist aan het inmiddels tot Nederlands Forensisch Instituut herdoopte GL, welke functie hij tot 2007 vervulde.
In 2003 promoveerde hij aan de universiteit Leiden op een proefschrift met de titel Op zoek naar de bron: over de grondslagen van de criminalistiek en de waarde van het forensisch bewijs, waarvoor hij in 2006 de Prof. A.E.J. Moddermanprijs voor dissertaties op het gebied van de strafrecht(hulp)wetenschappen ontving. In 2004 werd hij benoemd tot bijzonder hoogleraar criminalistiek bij de faculteit Rechtsgeleerdheid van de universiteit Leiden. In 2007 volgde zijn benoeming tot hoogleraar-directeur van het forensisch instituut (i.o.) van de Universiteit Maastricht. Hij is bestuurslid en medeoprichter van de IAFPA (International Association for Forensic Phonetics and Acoustics) en was van 1998 tot 2002 (de eerste) voorzitter van de ENFSI Expert Working Group for Forensic Speech and Audio Analysis. Ook is hij sinds 1995 lid van de redactie van The International Journal of Speech, Language and the Law en trad hij op als Reporting Officer voor het gebied Forensic Speech and Audio Analysis, and Forensic Linguistics voor het 13e en 14e Interpol Forensic Science Symposium, Lyon, Frankrijk in 2001 en 2004.
