Bram Akkermans (1979) holds a law degree from the European Law School at Maastricht University (the Netherlands) (2002) and studied at Stellenbosch University (South Africa). During his studies he was a student assistant on several occasions and a member of the board of a student association. After his studies, he was a course developer and lecturer in International and European Law at Fontys University of Professional Education (Eindhoven, the Netherlands).
In February 2004, Bram Akkermans started working as a junior researcher at the Faculty of Law, Maastricht University. His Ph.D. research, under supervision of Prof. dr. J.H.M. Van Erp, concerns the principle of numerus clausus and concepts of ownership in Europe. The project attempts to create a framework for harmonisation of property law in Europe by comparing the legal systems of the Netherlands, Germany, France, England and South Africa.
In October 2004 and 2006 he spent time at Brasenose College, Oxford University. In September and October 2005 he was a visiting scholar at the Zentrum für Eurpäische Rechtspolitik (ZERP), University of Bremen, and a guest at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign Private Law and Private International Law in Hamburg. In March 2007 he was a visiting researcher at the Faculty of Law at Stellenbosch University in South Africa.
During his time as a junior researcher he was representative of the Maastricht Ph.D. candidates in the Ius Commune Research School, chairman of the Ph.D. Council of the Research School and advisory member of the Board of that same Research School. His research was completed with a PhD Thesis ‘The Principle of Numerus Clausus in European Property Law’ in October 2008.
From February 2008 Bram was appointed Assistant Professor European Private Law at the Faculty of Law. He works as secretary and co-author on the Ius Commune Casebook Property Law (www.casebooks.eu) and as secretary to the newly created Review of European Property Law. He has delivered several papers on his research at national and international conferences.

Bram Akkermans (1979) studeerde aan de European Law School, Universiteit Maastricht (2002) en de Universiteit van Stellenbosch, Zuid Afrika. Gedurende zijn studie was hij verschillende keren student assistent. Hij was tevens bestuurslid van een studentenvereniging. Na zijn studie was hij programma ontwikkelaar en docent Internationaal en Europees recht aan het instituut Marketing Management, Fontys Hogescholen in Eindhoven.
In februari 2004 is hij begonnen als junior onderzoeker aan de Faculteit der Rechtsgeleerdheid, Universiteit Maastricht. Zijn proefschrift, onder begeleiding van prof. mr. J.H.M. van Erp, betreft het gesloten stelsel van goederenrechtelijke rechten (numerus clausus) en het begrip eigendom in Europa. Het project draagt de titel ‘The principle of numerus clausus and concepts of ownership in Europe’. Dit project beoogt, door middel van een rechtshistorische vergelijkende studie van het Nederlandse, Duitse, Franse, Engelse en Zuid Afrikaanse recht een raamwerk te creëren voor een meer uniform goederenrecht in Europa.
In oktober 2004 en 2006 was hij te gast aan Brasenose College, Universiteit van Oxford. In september en oktober 2005 was hij in het kader van zijn promotieonderzoek te gast bij Zentrum für Europäische Rechtspolitik (ZERP) aan de Universiteit Bremen en het Max Planck instituut voor buitenlands privaatrecht en internationaal privaatrecht in Hamburg. In maart 2007 was hij gastonderzoeker aan de faculteit rechtsgeleerdheid van de Universiteit Stellenbosch in Zuid Afrika.
Op dit moment is hij vertegenwoordiger van de Maastrichtse promovendi in de onderzoeksschool Ius Commune, voorzitter van de promovendiraad en adviserend lid van het bestuur van deze onderzoekschool. Daarnaast is Bram secretaris en mede auteur van het Ius Commune Casebook Property Law (www.casebooks.eu). Hij heeft meerdere malen over onderzoek gepresenteerd op nationale en internationale conferenties.
Tijdens zijn tijd als junior onderzoeker was Bram vertegenwoordiger van de Maastrichtse promovendi in de onderzoeksschool Ius Commune, voorzitter van de promovendiraad en adviserend lid van het bestuur van deze onderzoekschool. Zijn promotie onderzoek werd voltooid met een proefschrift ‘The Principle of Numerus Clausus in European Property Law’ in oktober 2008.
Sinds februari 2008 is hij Univeritair Docent aan de Faculteit der Rechtsgeleerheid. Hij is secretaris en mede auteur van het Ius Commune Casebook Property Law (www.casebooks.eu) en redactiesecretaris van het nieuw op te richten Review of European Property Law. Hij heeft meerdere malen zijn onderzoek gepresenteerd op nationale en internationale conferenties.
